I have volunteered for food banks before. Do you folks need help?
You are impacting lives
I certainly hope this message gets to appropriate person. Today, April 21 I accompanied my father-in-law to ur food bank, which I do whenever I possibly can to help him carry his proceeds. I have been a true fan of your Thrift shop for several years and donate regularly, as well as shop there and believe in giving back to our community. Today we both were witness to a unsettling site at approximately 11am when we arrived. Your food bank and soup kitchen were both doing double time, I suppose due to rainy weather on Monday, your tables were nearly filled, and the majority seemed to be young Hispanic women with young children in strollers. It became quite apparent by the looks of the baby strollers that a variety of fresh produce had been brought out on your 'help yourself' boxes. .. Except all the boxes were empty and the strollers were stuffed with corn-on-cob, tomatoes, green peppers, bananas, apples and oranges. As we and serveral other Elderly white folk waited our turns to be called to the window, more boxes of produce were brought out and in lightening fast fashion converged upon by young Hispanic women and totally ravaged within seconds, leaving none for older, slower people and all stuffed into overflowing baby strollers. One 81 year old women said that group was there when she arrived and she said that in all likelihood would stay until you closed at 1pm, waiting for more. My suggestion is that when boxes of fresh produce is placed outside that you should have a volunteer administer at 2 per person limit as so the weak and slow can enjoy and not be out-numbered and pushed aside.. I litterly saw a convoy of Elbows to keep any one, but their group, away from boxes.. This is not right and I don't feel the purpose of your much needed offerings to the less fortunate amoung us. My intent is not to have this sound like a racial divide, but what I saw was the old and weak verises the young and strong/greedy mentality happen today and it saddened / upset me greatly as I know you strive to do so much needed good within our community. We have reached a critical juncture in our society and the truly needy are still being pushed aside by the ones who simply take advantage. You need to fairly distribute by supervising, even though this stresses your resources furthure. I thank you and the Catholic parish for the help you have given my family.
