This is a great place for those in need of food, clothing and assorted household items. Today was my first visit since they have reorganized their system and the experience was anything BUT organized. I have been on disability over 10 years due to mobility issues and cannot stand on my feet very long. From the time I walked in and was given a number, ro the time I got out the door took 2 1/2 hours. The new food distribution system is unorganized chaos with people pushing, crowding and cutting in line every step of the way. The time on my feet was more than I could bear.

Pantry Details, hours, photos, information: The River Food Pantry

Free groceries
Families in need can shop once a week for items they need, just as they do in a grocery store. Inside The River warehouse are shelves and freezer cases filled with donated and purchased meats, groceries, and staples.

Clients chose their own groceries. The amount of non-perishable food each client household takes home is limited by family size and is supplemented by additional choices of meat, pastries, bread, and produce. We believe that all adults deserve the dignity of choosing what foods they want for themselves and their families.

Consider that prior to The Great Recession, fully 40 percent of pantry users were employed and struggling to make ends meet. Our clients are not chronically unemployed or "addicted to charity" as some might have you believe. Instead, they have transitional needs.

Coming to a food pantry for assistance can be a difficult and even humbling experience. Providing validation and encouragement to our clients is another kind of nourishment "and just as important as helping them take care of themselves and their families.

Free Hot Meals
Tuesday and Friday dinners allow hundreds of pantry users the chance to dine and socialize as individuals and families.

Rather than evoking drab "soup kitchen" surroundings, the dining area is livened with donated flowers and music to provide a pleasant atmosphere.
Why? Part of our mission is to keep people connected to the broader community so that they do not feel helpless, alone, or alienated.

Free Clothing:
Alongside pantry shopping sessions, clients can take home free clothing that they choose from our clothing area. What a blessing it can be for struggling families to find just the right item for their rapidly growing children. We also offer miscellaneous household items, small appliances, and furniture.

Additional Services: Volunteer nurses conduct blood pressure, blood sugar, and other health screenings. Outreach workers perform eligibility screenings for BadgerCare, FoodShare, and other helping programs.

Empowerment: We endeavor to build people's confidence, dignity, and the wherewithal to improve their situation. Pantry users are encouraged to lend a hand "to give as well as to receive.

Approximately 25 percent of volunteers also use the pantry, thus breaking down the walls between servers and the served.
